Israeli Opposition Backs Eisenkot for Prime Minister

(MENAFN) Israeli opposition figures held their first meeting since last week's parliamentary elections on Tuesday, reaching an agreement to support Yashar party leader Gadi Eisenkot as their candidate for prime minister, according to local media reports.

Those attending included Eisenkot, former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett of the Together party, Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman, Democrats leader Yair Golan and opposition leader Yair Lapid.

The discussions took place amid political divisions and a deadlock between rival parliamentary blocs, neither of which currently holds enough seats to secure a governing majority.

Following the meeting, Bennett urged opposition parties to accelerate efforts to establish a new government, pledging his party's full backing for Eisenkot.

“We have no time. We need to act with great urgency,” Bennett said, calling on the opposition to move quickly to obtain the mandate to form a government.

The Oct. 27 elections gave Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc 53 seats in the 120-member Knesset, compared with 48 seats for opposition parties and 19 for Arab parties.

With the opposition falling short of the 61 seats needed for a parliamentary majority, it would require backing from Arab lawmakers or parties outside Netanyahu's coalition to form a government.
