Gosport Anti-Migrant Protest Turns Violent as Police Arrest Twelve
Hampshire Police said Monday that 11 men and one woman were detained on suspicion of various offences, including assaults on police officers, affray and racially aggravated public order offences.
The arrests followed a protest held Sunday at a marina in Gosport, Hampshire, after 149 migrants were rescued in the middle of the English Channel by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) working alongside a French vessel, according to the Home Office.
During the confrontation, protesters set off flares and several physical altercations broke out between demonstrators and police. Authorities established a cordon along Haslar Road as tensions escalated.
Some protesters also blocked police vans from moving forward while chanting "shame on you" and "deport the lot," according to reports.
Hampshire Police said officers had been sent to assist partner agencies in responding to "support our partners in the event of an emergency at sea" involving the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the RNLI and Border Security Command.
The force also introduced measures under the Public Order Act, including a ban on wearing face coverings during the demonstration.
