Asian Allies Reconsider Ties with Israel Over Gaza War

(MENAFN) Israel’s relationships with several of its longstanding Asian partners have come under increasing strain during the three-year war in Gaza, as criticism of its actions has grown and diplomatic support has weakened.

The growing divide was particularly visible during the United Nations General Assembly late last month, when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faced a mass walkout as numerous delegates left the chamber while he was speaking.

Representatives from several Asian countries, including Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia and Bangladesh, were among those who departed.

Asian governments have taken varying positions toward Israel and the Gaza conflict, with several longtime partners becoming increasingly critical of its conduct.

Israel has encountered growing criticism from established partners in East Asia, including Japan and South Korea, over its actions in Gaza.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi rejected US sanctions imposed on International Criminal Court (ICC) President Tomoko Akane, who had sought an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza.

Speaking during the UN General Assembly, Takaichi reiterated Japan’s longstanding backing for the ICC and resisted pressure from Washington, saying that the country takes the US sanctions against Akane “very seriously.”

The US imposed sanctions on Akane in August, making her the first Japanese national to lead the ICC, and accused the court of violating state sovereignty.
