Macron Calls for Political Solution, Israeli Withdrawal from Lebanon

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday called on Israel to abandon any territorial ambitions in Lebanon, stressing that only a negotiated political settlement can ensure lasting stability in the region.

Speaking during a joint press conference at the Élysée Palace with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Macron said Israel must fully withdraw from Lebanese territory and refrain from pursuing any territorial claims, warning that the current ceasefire remains fragile.

He said that “the only way” to achieve peace is through a political agreement between Israel and Lebanon that guarantees both countries’ security while preserving Lebanon’s territorial integrity.

Macron also raised the possibility of the European Union reconsidering its relationship with Israel, saying there is a “legitimate question” over whether the bloc should suspend its association agreement if Israel continues policies he described as inconsistent with its historical commitments, particularly in Lebanon.

However, he cautioned against rushing into escalatory measures, noting that recent steps toward a ceasefire and ongoing discussions should be given time to develop.

“But things clearly cannot continue as they did a few years ago,” he added, emphasizing that stabilizing the ceasefire would require sustained diplomatic engagement rather than quick action.

He further warned that the truce would take time to solidify, saying it “will not be resolved in a few hours or a few days.”
