Lebanon Rebuffs Trump’s Israel Phone Call Claim
Two Lebanese official sources told media they had received no indication whatsoever that any such contact was being planned.
"We do not have any information at this time about a possible call between the Lebanese presidency and the Israeli side," the sources told media.
The denial came just hours after Trump took to his Truth Social platform Wednesday to announce that Washington is "trying to get a little breathing room between Israel and Lebanon. It has been a long time since the two leaders have spoken, like 34 years. It will happen tomorrow."
The presidential post followed a high-profile meeting Tuesday at the State Department, where Lebanese Ambassador Nada Hamadeh and Israeli Ambassador Yechiel Leiter sat down together under the roof of Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Also present were US Ambassador to Lebanon Michel Issa, State Department Counselor Michael Needham, and US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz.
Notably absent from the table was Hezbollah, which was not represented at the gathering and has since rejected the move outright.
From the Israeli side, Science Minister Gila Gamliel said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to hold a phone call with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun — though no senior Israeli official moved swiftly to corroborate the claim.
The diplomatic maneuvering unfolds against a backdrop of unrelenting violence. Israel has pressed on with attacks in southern Lebanon since a Hezbollah cross-border strike on March 2 shattered a November 2024 ceasefire agreement. Lebanese health authorities report more than 2,000 people killed and well over one million displaced since hostilities resumed in March.
