Meloni Says Italy to Suspend Automatic Renewal of Israel Defense Deal

(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced Tuesday that Italy will suspend its defense cooperation agreement with Israel, citing the evolving situation, according to media reports.

Speaking to reporters at an event in Verona, Meloni said, as reported by media, "We have decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel in consideration of the current situation."

The move follows direct communication between defense officials. Italy’s Defense Minister Guido Crosetto has informed Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz of Rome’s request to halt the agreement, the report said.

Meloni also urged broader international engagement to de-escalate tensions, calling for renewed diplomatic efforts to advance peace talks, restore stability, and resume the flow of essential supplies, including energy.

According to Corriere della Sera, the agreement—originally enacted around 2005 and renewed every five years—covers defense cooperation, including the exchange of military equipment and joint technological research.
