UN Chief Calls for Resumed U.S.-Iran Negotiations

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called on Washington and Tehran to press forward with negotiations, his spokesman announced Monday, expressing cautious optimism following the inconclusive Islamabad talks while sounding the alarm over the deepening humanitarian and economic consequences of a prolonged standoff.

Spokesman Stéphane Dujarric acknowledged that the Pakistan-hosted discussions between the United States and Iran failed to produce an agreement, but argued the engagement itself carried meaningful weight — reflecting the seriousness of both parties and representing a constructive step toward renewed diplomacy.

"Given the deeply rooted differences, an agreement cannot be reached overnight, and the secretary-general calls on the talks to continue constructively for an agreement to be reached," Dujarric said in a statement.

The spokesman was equally unambiguous about the limits of military force. After weeks of destruction and mounting suffering, Dujarric stated plainly that no military solution exists to resolve the current conflict — a pointed message directed at all parties involved. He further stressed that the existing ceasefire must be unconditionally upheld, demanding that all violations come to an immediate halt.

Guterres also weighed in on the escalating maritime crisis, insisting that every party to the conflict bears an obligation to respect freedom of navigation — including through the Strait of Hormuz — in strict accordance with international law.

The economic and humanitarian fallout from the disruption of maritime trade through the strait has already reverberated far beyond the immediate region, Dujarric warned, intensifying global economic fragility and sowing instability across multiple sectors. Of particular concern, the spokesman noted, is the disruption to fertilizer supplies and related inputs — a development that is compounding food insecurity for millions of the world's most vulnerable populations, further straining communities already battered by rising fuel costs, transportation bottlenecks, and widespread supply chain dislocations.
