Ukraine, UAE Agree to Advance Bilateral Cooperation

(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan reached an agreement Saturday to accelerate bilateral cooperation, with security and defense emerging as the centerpiece of high-stakes talks held in the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi.

The meeting marked a significant diplomatic moment as both nations moved to formalize deeper ties against a backdrop of mounting regional tensions, including rising concern over the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and its cascading effects on global oil markets.

Kyiv acknowledged in an official statement that UAE officials had expressed appreciation for the work of Ukrainian military specialists operating within the Emirates, particularly their contributions to countering Iranian drone threats — a capability that has taken on heightened strategic significance across the region.

The two heads of state reviewed the security landscape across the UAE and the broader Middle East, examining what the statement described as "possible steps" to address ongoing threats. Both sides agreed to broaden their defense and security cooperation, with delegations from each country actively working to finalize the terms of formal agreements. The UAE, for its part, reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to protect its national sovereignty.

On the economic front, an Emirati state news agency reported that the leaders explored avenues to strengthen trade and investment ties. "The two sides also discussed opportunities to advance bilateral cooperation under the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between the UAE and Ukraine, reaffirming their shared commitment to achieving its objectives," the news agency stated.

Zelenskyy's stop in Abu Dhabi forms part of a broader working visit to the Gulf. The trip follows a landmark agreement signed Friday between Ukraine and Saudi Arabia — a defense cooperation deal finalized ahead of Zelenskyy's meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah — underscoring Kyiv's intensifying diplomatic push across the Arabian Peninsula.
