US Senate Criticizes Trump’s Handling of Iran Conflict

(MENAFN) US Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday sharply criticized President Donald Trump’s management of the military operation in Iran, accusing the administration of sending conflicting messages and demanding public testimony from senior officials, according to reports.

"Donald Trump's war with Iran grows more confusing and more contradictory by the day," Schumer said on the Senate floor, highlighting the inconsistent statements from the White House regarding the conflict.

His comments followed remarks from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who warned that US forces were preparing for the "most intense day of strikes" inside Iran as part of Operation Epic Fury. Schumer contrasted this with Trump’s statement on Monday suggesting that the operation might already be approaching its conclusion.

"Well, which is it? Is the war ending, or are we on the brink of the worst fighting yet? How is it possible that Trump and his cronies can't make it 12 hours without contradicting themselves about this war? It's incredible," Schumer said.

Schumer accused Trump of making statements without a clear understanding of the facts, noting that the president’s comments are often contradicted by his own remarks the following day.

The senator also challenged Trump’s assertion that Iranian Tomahawk missiles were responsible for a strike on an all-girls school that reportedly killed 175 civilians, many of them children.

"Iran doesn't have Tomahawk missiles, Donald Trump! The claim is beyond asinine," Schumer said.

Trump had claimed on Monday that Iran possesses Tomahawk cruise missiles, citing the weapon as evidence in the airstrike on the school. "And whether it's Iran, who also has some Tomahawks — they wish they had more — but whether it's Iran or somebody else, the fact is that a Tomahawk is very generic. It's sold to other countries, but that's being investigated right now," he said, referring to the Pentagon’s ongoing review of the incident.

Schumer called for a "full, independent and transparent" investigation into the airstrike and the resulting civilian casualties. "There needs to be accountability," he added.
