US Defense Department Spends USD93.4B in End-of-Year Spending Spree

(MENAFN) The US Defense Department reportedly spent a record $93.4 billion in September 2025, including millions on luxury food items, in a frantic effort to utilize its funding before the end of the fiscal year, according to reports.

While most of this expenditure went toward military grants and contracts, a notable portion was directed to high-end food purchases. The report highlighted $15.1 million spent on ribeye steaks, $6.9 million on lobster tails, and $2 million on Alaskan king crab. Additional spending included $1 million on salmon, $139,224 on 272 orders of doughnuts, $124,000 for ice cream machines, and $26,000 for sushi preparation tables.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth commented in a speech to the military on September 30, stating that it is "completely unacceptable to see fat generals and admirals in the halls of the Pentagon."

The spending patterns are not unusual, according to watchdog reports. The group noted that this is the fifth instance under President Donald Trump where the Pentagon spent $2 million or more on Alaskan king crab in a single month—twice during his first term and three times in 2025. The only other occurrence was during President Joe Biden’s administration in February 2021.
