Gaza Media Office Reports Low Compliance Rate at Rafah

(MENAFN) The Gaza media office announced on Monday that adherence to the reopening of the Rafah border crossing between Egypt and Gaza Strip reached just 29%, citing stringent Israeli limitations.

In an official communiqué, the office revealed that from Feb. 2 through Feb. 15, merely 811 passengers managed to transit through the crossing in both directions, despite 2,800 individuals being slated for travel during that timeframe.

The breakdown showed that 455 individuals were permitted to exit Gaza, 356 were able to enter, while 26 others were denied passage and sent back within the same period.

The statement further explained that Israel resumed operations on the Palestinian side of the crossing on Feb. 2, though in a highly restricted capacity, after maintaining control since May 2024.

The media office also indicated that it had not been provided with the standards or benchmarks applied to define the total number of travelers authorized to pass.

Previously, Egyptian and Israeli media outlets reported that roughly 50 Palestinians were projected to cross into Gaza each day, with a comparable number heading into Egypt, including patients and accompanying relatives. However, the office clarified that this arrangement was not completely enforced.

Estimates from Palestinian sources within Gaza suggest that approximately 22,000 injured and ill individuals urgently need to leave the enclave to obtain medical care, particularly amid the deterioration of the healthcare system.

Semi-official data further indicates that nearly 80,000 Palestinians have signed up to return to Gaza, underscoring persistent opposition to displacement despite the extensive devastation across the territory.
