Guinea’s court certifies General Doumbouya as winner of presidential election

(MENAFN) Guinea’s Supreme Court on Sunday officially declared General Mamady Doumbouya the winner of the December 28 presidential election, awarding him 86.72% of the vote.

Doumbouya will serve a seven-year term, according to the ruling delivered by Supreme Court President Fode Bangoura. Runner-up Abdoulaye Yero Balde garnered 6.59% of the vote and voluntarily withdrew his legal challenge to the provisional results.

The election took place under a new constitution ratified in a September referendum, which extended the presidential term from five to seven years and removed restrictions barring military leaders from seeking office.

In a broadcast following the announcement, Doumbouya stated, “Today, there are neither winners nor losers. There is only one Guinea, united and indivisible.” He urged citizens to work together to “build a new Guinea, a Guinea of peace, justice, shared prosperity, and fully assumed political and economic sovereignty.”

This marked Guinea’s first presidential election since the September 2021 military coup in which Doumbouya led forces to oust then-President Alpha Conde. The country has faced recurring political instability and coups since gaining independence from France in 1958. Supporters credit Doumbouya with advancing major development initiatives during his four years in office, particularly in mining and infrastructure.

The electoral commission initially reported voter turnout at approximately 80.95%, later revised by the Supreme Court to 82.86% in the official tally.

Several world leaders have congratulated Doumbouya on his victory, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
