Moscow condemns US capture of Maduro as threat to global order
Speaking at an emergency UN Security Council meeting, Nebenzia said Washington’s operation in Venezuela reveals the type of world order the US seeks to impose, noting that it “horrifies even the staunchest Atlanticists.”
US forces abducted Maduro and his wife on Saturday during an incursion into the oil-rich nation, transporting them first to a warship and then to New York. The couple appeared in court on Monday facing conspiracy charges related to drug trafficking. Maduro pleaded not guilty, declaring, “I am a decent man!”
The Venezuelan president had previously warned that the US was attempting to seize control of the country’s natural resources. President Donald Trump stated on Sunday that the aim is to “run” Venezuela and exploit its economic assets.
Nebenzia denounced the US actions as “international banditry,” criticizing Washington’s pursuit of hegemonic ambitions in Latin America and its desire for “unlimited control over natural resources,” which he said revives neo-colonial and imperialist tendencies.
