UK implements countrywide ban on junk food ads on television
The new regulations prohibit the promotion of food and drink deemed high in fat, salt and sugar from appearing on television before 9 p.m. local time. In addition, such products are barred from being advertised through paid online content at any time.
“Children will be protected from excessive exposure to unhealthy food adverts on television and online,” the Department of Health said in a statement.
Authorities estimate that the measures could lower the number of children affected by obesity by 20,000 and generate approximately £2 billion ($2.68 billion) in long-term health-related benefits.
Government data show that 22.1% of children in England are classified as overweight or obese when they begin primary school, a figure that rises to 35.8% by the end of their primary education.
Public Health Minister Ashley Dalton said the restrictions on pre-9 p.m. television advertising and the ban on paid online promotions are intended to limit children’s exposure to unhealthy food marketing and support families in making healthier choices.
Health advocacy groups also welcomed the move, saying it would shield children from the most harmful forms of junk food advertising. Diabetes campaigners stressed that improving children’s health is increasingly urgent as type 2 diabetes continues to rise among younger age groups.
“Obesity is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes, and the condition can lead to more severe consequences in young people, leaving them at risk of serious complications like kidney failure and heart disease,” she said.
