Floods result in ten deaths, five missing in Vietnam
The heavy downpours, triggered by a cold front combined with a tropical convergence zone, have battered the region since October 23, with some areas recording more than 1,000 millimeters of rainfall.
Authorities said more than 7,000 households—around 21,000 residents—have been forced to evacuate. Hydropower reservoirs are currently being used to help ease flooding downstream.
In Da Nang, one of the hardest-hit cities, six people were killed, 19 injured, and four remain unaccounted for. Floodwaters have inundated 29 communes in the Vu Gia–Thu Bon River basin, while 10 mountainous communes have been isolated due to landslides.
In Hue, one person drowned and a 5-year-old girl has gone missing in rising waters. Thirty-two out of the city’s 40 communes remain submerged.
Further south in Quang Ngai province, three fatalities were reported, while more than 120 landslides have blocked highways and stranded vehicles.
Local authorities, with military assistance, have launched rescue operations, though continuing rainfall has hampered progress.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that more heavy rain is expected to persist through Thursday night.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired an emergency meeting on Wednesday to coordinate disaster response and direct recovery efforts.
