EU Urges Russia to End Conflict
(MENAFN) The European Union’s foreign affairs chief on Tuesday urged Russia to halt its ongoing war in Ukraine and return to peace negotiations, emphasizing that Western nations remain united in offering Kyiv firm security assurances.
During the European Parliament’s first full session following the summer break, Kaja Kallas stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin “has zero interest in peace and will not stop the war until he is forced to.”
She highlighted that the EU and its member nations have contributed almost €169 billion in financial backing to Ukraine since the invasion began in 2022, with over €63 billion allocated specifically for military assistance.
“This year alone, member states will provide more than ever before, €25 billion. To date, they have delivered 80% of our target of 2 million rounds of ammunition. By October, we aim to reach 100%,” she said.
Kallas stressed that Western partners remain aligned on enduring security guarantees.
“The West is united in providing security guarantees to Ukraine. There are now serious pledges on the table from the Coalition of the Willing,” she remarked.
She reminded lawmakers that on Sept. 4, just one day after the coalition met in Paris, Putin issued threats against any Western presence on the ground, including peacekeeping forces.
“This represents a serious escalation from Russia and directly undermines European security,” Kallas warned.
“Our message to Russia is simple: this war is not winnable. Leave the battlefield and come to the table with Ukraine,” she concluded.
