EU Speeds Up Trade Negotiations with U.S.

(MENAFN) European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen engaged in a “good exchange” with US President Donald Trump on Sunday, as the European Union speeds up negotiations to finalize a transatlantic trade agreement before the critical July 9 deadline, an EU official revealed Monday.

“President von der Leyen had a call with President Trump yesterday, and that they had good exchange, and that indeed the president continues to be in contact with EU leaders,” Stefan de Keersmaecker, an EU spokesperson, told reporters during a briefing.

With the clock ticking, the EU aims to secure at least a preliminary deal by July 9 to prevent the imposition of new US tariffs set to start August 1, according to Washington.

“We're working towards the 9th of July as the point where we want to have at a minimum agreement in principle with the US,” stated Olof Gill, a spokesperson for the EU Commission. “Progress has been made towards an agreement in principle.”

Gill highlighted that “good progress” was achieved during last week’s visit by EU Commissioner Maros Sefcovic to Washington, followed by consultations with EU member states on July 4. Since then, political and technical discussions have continued.

“We are fully committed to finding a deal that benefits EU, businesses, consumers and the overall global economy, as has been our intention from the start,” Gill emphasized.

Regarding US President Trump’s anticipated letters detailing specific tariff measures to be sent beginning Monday, Gill refrained from commenting: “We're not going to comment on letters that we haven't received, and we're also not going to comment on comments made by the US administration.”

Earlier this year, the US imposed “reciprocal” tariffs on numerous countries but later suspended them for 90 days to allow time for trade negotiations.
