China Calls Defense Cooperation with Pakistan "Normal"
During a live-streamed press briefing in Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated, “China and Pakistan are traditional, good neighbors, and cooperation on defense and military is normal cooperation (that) does not target any third country.”
Mao's remarks came in response to questions regarding the relationship between Islamabad and Beijing following recent cross-border missile exchanges between India and Pakistan in May.
The spokesperson dismissed concerns that the military ties were provocative, reiterating that the partnership is not directed at any other nation.
When asked further about China’s stance, Mao remarked, “The judgement varies from person to person,” suggesting that opinions on the nature of China-Pakistan relations differ.
Highlighting the geographical and historical proximity of the two South Asian rivals, Mao noted that India and Pakistan “cannot be moved away.”
She added, “We support the two countries for dialogue and consultation to properly handle their differences and disagreements, and jointly maintain the peace and stability of the region.”
She also emphasized that “China will continue to play a constructive role to this end.”
Addressing efforts to strengthen diplomatic relations with New Delhi, Mao said, “China-India relationship is in a critical moment of improvement… of development. We would like to work with India to promote the steady and sound growth of the China-India relationship.”
The statements, reported during a live-streamed press event, underline China’s attempt to balance its ties with both Pakistan and India, while presenting itself as a stabilizing force in the region.
