Media Reports US Did Not Intercept Iranian Missiles Fired at Israel

(MENAFN) The United States military did not intercept any Iranian ballistic missiles launched toward Israel overnight, contradicting an earlier claim made by an Israeli military official, according to a media report citing a US official.

Media reported that the absence of US interception marks a significant departure from previous rounds of conflict, when American forces deployed missile defense systems to actively shield Israel against Iranian attacks.

The same official told media that despite the US sitting out the interception effort, the Israeli military maintained close coordination with US forces throughout the operation.

According to the report, Israeli Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir held two separate conversations with US Central Command (CENTCOM) commander Adm. Brad Cooper during the exchange.

The latest escalation was triggered Sunday when Israel bombed the Lebanese capital Beirut in violation of an ongoing ceasefire. Iran retaliated by launching missiles toward northern Israel, and Israel subsequently carried out multiple waves of airstrikes against Iran.

The flare-up is the latest chapter in a volatile cycle of hostilities that has gripped the region since US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran in late February set off a cascade of retaliatory exchanges targeting Israel and regional countries hosting US military assets.

A temporary ceasefire brokered on April 8 had offered a brief respite, but talks over its implementation broke down amid fresh regional developments, leaving the situation as precarious as ever.
