Trump associates Iran attacks to Hiroshima

(MENAFN) President Donald Trump has likened recent U.S. airstrikes on Iran to the World War II bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, suggesting the offensive played a decisive role in ending Iran’s conflict with Israel. Speaking at the NATO summit in The Hague on Wednesday, Trump claimed the strikes halted Iranian aggression.

“I don’t want to say Hiroshima or Nagasaki, but it was basically the same thing. That ended that war—this ended this war,” Trump said. He added that without the airstrikes, hostilities between Iran and Israel would still be ongoing.

Trump also lashed out at mainstream media, accusing outlets such as CNN, MSNBC, and The New York Times of downplaying the effectiveness of the attacks. “You have some great reporters, but you also have scum,” he remarked.

Over the weekend, the U.S. launched a series of unprecedented strikes on three key Iranian nuclear facilities in coordination with Israel’s 12-day military campaign. Trump later announced a ceasefire, claiming the targeted sites had been “totally obliterated.” Iran, however, denied any critical damage to its civilian nuclear infrastructure, insisting its program remains intact and peaceful.

A preliminary Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) assessment, cited by multiple media outlets, suggested the strikes may have only temporarily delayed Iran’s nuclear development by a few months. CNN, citing sources familiar with the intelligence, reported that Iran had safeguarded much of its enriched uranium and that underground centrifuge facilities were largely unaffected.

In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran is reassessing its cooperation with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), arguing that two decades of transparency have not yielded meaningful outcomes. He reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to developing its nuclear program for peaceful energy purposes.
